The Czech Republic was formed out of the breakup of Czechoslovakia. It is participating in the World Cup for the first time. Czechoslovakia took part in the tournament eight times.
Stars Juventus midfielder Pavel Nedved was specially reactivated for the play-offs, although he had retired from the international team. He then once again shined as the key player. Now the Czechs hope that Nedved will also play in the World Cup.
Jan Koller second highest scorer in european qualifying will be another star to watch for.
